Visited Yanan and joined the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and joined the Communist Party of China in 1937 in 1936. During the Yanan, he make a diagnosis several tens of thousands of persons for the intersection of border area and army and the people, participate in establishing a plurality of hospitals, founding Xinhua News Agency English department. After new China is established, he is the first foreigner that is naturalized in China. Appointed as the advisor of Ministry of Public Health in 1950.
